West’s Need For German Army
(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 14. General Alfred Gruenther, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said today that Western defences were considerably stronger than they were three years ago, but he added that at present “we could not successfully withstand an all-out attack” by the Soviet Union. “That is the very reason why we at headquarters think we need a German contribution to the West’s defence system,” he told reporters when he arrived to testify before Congressional committees on military security legislation.
