GYMNASTICS

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL FORMED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 15. Gymnastics as an organised sport in New Zealand has reached national status with the formation of the New Zealand Gymnastics Council. The headquarters will be at Auckland. Gymnastics associations in four North Island centres had been working since early this year for the unification of their associations so that the sport could develop on co-ordinated lines. The first four associations to affiliate with the New Zealand council are Auckland, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki. Tentative inquiries have been received from Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill. Gymnastics is one of the oldest sports in the world, and is very popular in many countries, especially in Europe. It draws big entries at the Olympic Games. It is likely that a Waikato team will leave for Australia soon to compete there. The main object of the tour will be to learn the latest techniques and training methods.
