Three-Ton Rocket Demonstrated
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) FORT BRAGG (North Carolina), July 13. The Army fired one of its new giant bombardment rockets today. The three-ton missile, able in actual cornbat to carry a nuclear explosive warhead, went screaming off towards the horizon, the orange flame of its exhaust diminishing swiftly into the distance as the “Honest John” gained supersonic speed. This was the first public showing of the rocket designed to reach up to 20 miles behind enemy lipes with either conventional or atomic; explosive. The distance of today’s demonstration shot was not given. An announcer said only that the “range was correct, 50 yards left of target.” The Army said the accuracy of the rocket approaches that of standard artillery weapons. The weapon would be used to provide close and heavy fire support for ground tronos.
