RATE FOR CARE OF THE AGED

HALSWELL COUNCIL’S DISCUSSION “The point is whether this is a sound way to finance this sort of thing,” said the chairman (Mr J. Mackenie), when the Halswell County Council yesterday considered »a proposal that local bodies should levy a rate for the care of the aged. “I don’t think it is strictly fair to get all the finances out of a rate, as that would mean that only one section of the community would pay,” he said. Cr. J. G. Barclay said that the same argument could be applied to the hospital rate. It was now the policy of the Government to relieve ratepayers of the rate for the reason given by the chairman. It was agreed that the chairman and Cr. J. H. Williamson should attend a meeting convened by the Waimairi County Council to consider rating for the care of the aged.
