MACKENZIE THE REIVER
Sir—Out of respect for the Burnett family, whose interest in anything relating to the Mackenzie Country is so well know and appreciated, I had been reluctant to direct attention to the fact that the only reliable evidence we have confirms that Mackenzie was captured before he crossed the pass. However, it was strongly represented to me that for the guidance of future research workers' the facts should again be clearly • stated. On the one hand we have the evidence of Sidebottom, Stubbs and Teschemaker, and on the other, the statement attributed to George Dines, who as far as I am aware never worked on “The Levels” and was probably not even in the district at the time of Mackenzie’s capture. Sidebottom, in evidence, said he traced the sheep to a place called “Manahuni.” Manahune is on the eastern side of the Mackenzie Pass.— Yours, etc., S. P. BRAY. July 14, 1954.
