ARTHUR’S PASS CHAPEL

PRESBYTERY ENDORSES SCHEME An appeal for support for the building of the proposed interdenominational chapel at Arthur’s Pass was made to the Presbytery of Christchurch last evening by a deputation from the Arthur’s Pass Chapel Committee. The deputation comprised Messrs R. G. Dick and M. J. P. Glasgow. A model of the proposed chapel was on display. On the motion of the Rev.*T. G. Campbell, the presbytery assured the deputation of its interest and support where possible; Mr Dick said that although many had had such a chapel in mind for some time, the committee had been formed only recently. It comprised 18 members, including representatives from four Protestant churches and from seven large tramping, ski-ing, and climbing organisations. Since World War n more and more young persons had been going to the Arthur’s Pass area for sports, he said. “Possibly last week-end the number there would be as great as the number of adults attending all the Presbyterian churches in Christchurch. Of those, many would be Presbyterians.” The committee required £4OOO, and £7OO was already in sight, Mr Dick said. He suggested that laymen accept receipt books for collecting; that the young persons of the Church be urged to collect; and that the Christchurch and West Coast Presbyteries ask for a grant from the General Assembly.
