Britain Lifts Control On Hire Purchase

(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, July 13. The President of the Board of Trade (Mr Peter Thomeycrcfi) today announced that restrictions on hire purchase deposits and repayment periods, imposed as an anti-inflationary measure in 1952. had been lifted. Instead of having to put down a onethird deposit and pay the balance within 18 months, hirers could now pay as little as they could persuade the retailer to accept and take as long to pay as he would agree. Manufacturers and retailers of refrigerators, radios, televison arts and motor-cars expect a big increase in business. The restrictions, when imposed Tn 1952, had a drastic effect on the sales of most higher-priced luxury or semi-luxury goods.
