P.A.Y.E. INCOME TAX
Sir, —In this age, regimentation from the cradle to the grave is the bureaucratic pattern prescribed for us—the descendants of pioneers—by< both National and Labour’ Parties. The threat to individual liberty and initiative is real. Equally real is the pitiful apathy with which the average New Zealander accepts direction by an infinite variety of governments and local body officials, who are supposed to be the servants of the people. New Zealanders get up on their hind legs when outside dictation threatens, but raise not a whisper against bureaucratic regimentation from within. Our forebears must sleep uneasily—if. at all. Now, both the Government and the Opposition have the brazen effrontery to profess themselves better qualified to save our income taxes than we are ourselves. In the light of proposed P.A.Y.E. legislation, it is obvious that our servants of the people regard their electors as irresponsible, thriftless adolescents.—Yours, etc., JOHN McKENZIE, Epsom, Auckland. July 13, 1954.
