COMPETITION FOR EXPORT LAMBS
JUDGING PROCEDURE DISCUSSED
The penning of lambs for the 1954; district export lamb competition was! J»riefly discussed by the committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association in Christchurch yesterday. The committee received a letter from the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board notifying the terms of the competition. The letter said that entries of lambs should be kept intact in pens of three for local judging, and when the local awards were made the best three out of six could be selected for sending to England. Explaining the contents of the letter, the secretary (Mr M. E. Lyons) said that the association had always had the lambs penned in lots of six. At times there had been more than 120 p lambs entered, and these numbers were too big a burden for the association to carry under the board’s scheme. There was also the possibility that some exhibitors might have a 371 b lamb in one pen of three, and this would automatically rule that pen out. The association’s scheme, however, took such an eventuality into account, and if a 371 b lamb was discovered ih a pen of six, selections could be made from the other five lambs without ruling that pen out. “I think it is a retrograde step,” said Mr H. S. Lawrence. He said he considered the association should ignore the letter. It was decided to inform the board of the manner in which the association had been conducting the competition, give its reasons for doing so, and ask whether it could continue with the scheme.
