MINOR EVENTS AT TRENTHAM

ROYAL WARRANT IN FORM (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 14. The Riccarton-trained Royal Warrant brilliantly carried top weight of 9-1 to an easy victory in the Petone Handicap at Trentham today. His chance looked slim at the halfmile, where he had only one horse behind him, but. his run was so strong that he was clear at the furlong, and on his way tb a three-length victory from Indian Sue, which just best the faster-fin-ishing Ballast, another Riccarton hack. Indian Sue did not become prominent until she dashed through to follow Annexe, Superior King, and Josudi round the home turn. She kept up a good run in the straight, but could not match Royal Warrant for finishing speed, the latter being just behind her on the home turn. Ballast, the 11-13 favourite, appeared to be hopelessly placed starting the last half-mile, but he moved fast on the inner in the straight, and would have got up for second in another few strides. Annexe was half a length back, fourth, after having every chance. He was in front on the home turn. Fifth was a first-day winner, Pahoro. He led early, but when eased to get the trail, went back to about seventh on the inside. He had to be taken wider out to challenge in the straight, but his finish lacked racewinning dash. The favourite, Josudi, was one of the slowest away. He sped from’ the halfmile, to be third on the home turn, but he reached the end of his run outside the furlong.

Boleigh Succeeds An unlucky sixth on Monday, after having to jump through a wing of a hurdle s i ev^ en furlongs from home, Boleigh dodged trouble in the Corunna Hurdles P, utsta yed his opponents. Lady Gretchen pulled up lame in the straight. Major Surprise Red Bill caused the major surprise of me meeting when he won the Seatoun Handicap. He was bracketed with Prince Shar, and the combination was 20-20 in the betting The win dividend was £B5 ss.

Red Bill, a five-year-old Broiefort gelding from Wanganui, was soon handy in a big field. He was sixth at the half-mile and little further ahead at the furlong, but he got up in the last stride to beat Bulla, which was eighth on the home turn and mastered Benefactor and Quantico to reach the front inside the furlong. Diadema came home brilliantly for third, three and a half lengths back, after being one of the slowest beginners. She just lasted to beat the Riccartontrained Strada, which was slow away from near the outside of the field. Strada showed up very wide out, but well back, on the home turn and ran past a dozen horses over the last two furlongs. Foghorn, another slow beginner, finished fifth and was promoted to fourth when Strada weighed in light.
