Training Flight Over North Pole
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 13. Two Hastings aircraft returned to the Royal Air Force Flying College at Mamby, Lincolnshire, today after making training flights over the North Pole. The flights were made from an advanced base at Bodo, northern Norway. A detachment of 10 aircrew, six college students, and eight members of the ground crew made the flight, led by Air Commodore G. A. Walker, the college commandant. They left last week. One aeroplane was piloted by Wing Commander A. H. Humphrey, who flew the college’s jet aircraft Aries on its record-breaking flight from Cape Town to Britain last December. One passenger went along on the flights—Mr Frank Beaswick, a Labour member of Parliament, and a former Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The crew described the flights as successful, with clear weather all the way from Bodo to the Pole.
