SPEEDING ON AVENUES

TRAFFIC PATROLS TO BE INCREASED The numbers of motorists who have been using certain stretches of road in Christchurch as speedways have been causing the traffic department of the City Council some concern. In Bealey avenue the department is considering tripling its patrols in an endeavour to prevent and detect motorvehicjfes travelling at excessive speeds. “They think they have no obligation to the left whatever. Well, they have,” said the acting-superintendent (Mr H. W. Birdling) yesterday, commenting on motorists who drove at speed along the left hand roadway in the avenue. In Park terrace, Mr Birdling said,, it appeared that motorists were travelling at speeds much higher than 30 miles an hour. Motorists using Fitzgerald avenue and Ferry road were also often offenders. In Ferry road alone 50 motorists this year had been caught speeding by officers of the department; countless others must have gone undetected.
