TAR SEALING OF COUNTY ROADS

WAIREWA COUNCIL DISCUSSION

The possibility of tar sealing parts of the county roads was discussed by the Wairewa County Council at a recent meeting, and the clerk (Mr L. W, Wealleans) was instructed to get out comparative costs for the maintenance of sealed as against metal roads. Cr. N. Wright said that if the council did only a mile or so of sealed road each year it would be a step in the right direction. An annual programme should be arranged. The clerk said that he had been told that, provided the road surface was fairly good, preparation and sealing could be done for about £2OOO a mile.

It was suggested that the council could make a start with the flat sections of the Motukarara-Teddington and Little River-Port Levy highways. The Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan) -wrote asking the council if it proposed to adopt the simplified housing construction by-laws. It was decided to inform the Minister that the council had no building by-laws, but a discussion ensued as to whether they should be introduced. The chairman (Mr J. G. Lawrence) said that building was going on at the beach at Poranui (the outlet to Lake Forsyth). He said that unless the council assumed control, it would be building up trouble for itself. Referring to the recent introduction of old tram cars to the buildings at Poranui, Cr. W. C. Miller said he believed that it was important for city people to have a place where they could get fresh air without too much cost. By imposing restrictions, the council could stop a lot of people building. August 23 was fixed as the date for a conference on amalgamation between the Wairewa, Mount Herbert and Akaroa Counties. The Health Department advised that three samples of water taken from various supplies at Little River were unfit for human consumption.
