Australian Bill For Social Services

(N.Z. Press Association—Co-pyright) CANBERRA, July 12. Social services expenditure in Australia has risen more than £11,000,000 in the last year. The Federal Government spent £176,564,608 on social services during 1953-54. Expenditure in 1952-53 was £165,511,396 and in 1951-52 £137,607,996. This is revealed in details of the Consolidated Revenue Fund receipts and expenditure, released today by the Federal Treasurer, Sir Arthur Fadden. Main items of expenditure from the national welfare fund were: £ Age and invalid pensions .. 81,292,004 Child endowment .. 50,760,799 Medical benefits for pensioners .. .. 2,115,539 Hospital benefits .. .. 8,330,055 Pharmaceutical benefits .. 8,218,634 Expenditure on all items by the Commonwealth out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund in 1953-54 amounted to £966,502,478. Receipts totalled £1,022,786,349, giving a surplus of receipts over expenditure of £56,283,871. Income tax amounted to £526,972,713 in 1953-54, compared with £554,222,599 in 1952-53.
