RESTRICTIONS ON POWER
SAVINGS INSUFFICIENT ON FIRST DAY ' Another appeal to power consumers in the Christchurch M.E.D. area to observe the restrictions put into force this week was made yesterday by the department’s electrical engineer (Mr G. H. Battersby). He said’ that the saving on Monday was 11.7 per cent, above the reduced allocation. Only if voluntary savings were made could the South Island avoid power cuts. "If the savings do not amount to a good deal more in the next few days, I will acquaint the chairman of the electricity committee (Cr. G. Manning) t the facts, and he will decide when the committee is to meet,” said Mr Battersby, when he was asked what steps would be taken if the savings did not increase. Mr Battersby said inspectors from the department toured the city on Monday night, and took the names of those they detected breaking the regulations. The offenders were interviewed yesterday, and asked to abide by the restrictions.
