SEARCH FOR OIL IN BENGAL
(From a -Reuter Correspondent) NEW DELHI. The Indian Government has received proposals from four companies for rights to prospect for oil in the Bengal Basin. . Parliament has been told the names of three of the companies—Caltex (American), Burma Oil (British) and the Assam Oil Company (British), but not that of the fourth. The Assam Oil Company is also exploring the possibility of finding oil in the flat alluvial plains of the Brahmapootra Valley in Assam. Helicopters are being used for a seismic survey. Three oil refineries now being built' in India will together have the capacity to handle 3,710,d00 long tons of crude oil a year, yielding 147,000,000 gallons of petrol and 120,400,000 gallons of paraffin.
