RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH

RUGBY? FOOTBALL

BIG CROWD EXPECTED FROM SOUTHLAND A repetition, of the Southland Rugby "invasion” of 1933 is expected on August 14, when the Southland team meets Canterbury in the first Ranfurly Shield match of the season. Hundreds of Southland supporters are expected to arrive by road, and it is known that there will be 2000 or 3000 by train. In Christchurch, a committee of Southland Rugby enthusiasts, "the Canterbury branch of the Southland Invasion Committee,” has been preparing for the crowd, and its members’ first duty on the day of the match will be to meet the official train, due at Christchurch at 9.20 a.m. An old car and several lorries, all decorated, will move in procession behind the City of Christchurch Pipe Band from the station to Victoria square, where there will be brief addresses of welcome by the .president of the Canterbury Rugby Union (Mr W. C. Dailey) and the chairman of the Christchurch committee (Mr W. Jenkins). The secretary of the committee (Mr D. Nesbit) said yesterday that providing lunch for the official party was a problem. Some hotels were prepared to help, but they could not provide evening meals because of the crowd visiting Christchurch for the Grand National races at Riccarton. The committee was seeking the co-operation of the Railways Department.

Mr Nesbit said the committee was not prepared, by itself, to organise a procession on the lines of those staged at Hamilton and Wellington, but it would support some "bright individual” who wanted to organise a procession. The Canterbury Union recently made a similar statement.

Southland pipe arid brass bands are to accompany the small army of enthusiasts from the south, and they will give displays during the interval in the match.

TWO GAMES TODAY AT RUGBY PARK UNIVERSITIES AND SUB-UNIONS Because of the muddy state of the oval at Lancaster Park, the games between Canterbury University College and Otago University and Canterbury Sub-Unions and Golden Bay-Motueka, which were to have been played there today, have been transferred to Rugby Park. The universities game will be played at 1.30 p.m. and the main match at 3 p.m. The Otago University team, which is at the head of the competition in Dunedin, includes two South Island representatives in L. D. Smith, second five-eighths, and D. Ludbrook, a forward. These two and R. Archer, first five-eighths, played for the Rest against New Zealand at Wellington recently. The game between Canterbury SubUnions and Golden Bay-Motueka will provide another opportunity to study the form of Country players, several of whom are likely to find places in the Ranfurly Shield team to play Southland on August 14. The team chosen,\with few exceptions, is the same as played against Combined Universities and Town, and can be expected to show still farther improvement. Eleven of the 15 players and two of the emergencies chosen for today’s game played for the sub-unions last year, and have had plenty of experience, while three played in the South Island trials last year.

Following are the teams:— Golden Bay-Motueka; P. Capon; M. Brooks, R. Dixon, F. Papps; F. Hobson, J. Fry; D. O’Grady; D. Durrant; L. Heenan, D. Manson, P. Barry, L. Williams; H. Page, D.
