AKAROA LIGHTHOUSE

NEW POWER PLANT TO BE INSTALLED A new generator house and loading dock are to be built at the Akaroa lighthouse. Tenders for the work closed with the Ministry of Works yesterday. Until November, 1952, power at the lighthouse was provided by kerosene. Two diesel-driven generators which had been obtained on loan were then installed in a temporary ' building. These will be replaced by two new generators of the same type which are to be installed when the new building, about 18ft long and 12ft wide, has been built. The lighthouse is situated on a hill about eight miles from Akaroa, in « position which is very difficult of access. Trucks are used to deliver the diesel fuel every two months, and the new dock will facilitate the unloading of the oil. ,
