WENT DOWN WITH SHIP
N.Z. Master Lost In Wreck (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) BOMBAY. July 12. Captain C. H. Turner, a 55-year-old New Zealander, went down with his ship when it ran aground and sank last night near Jaffrabad, on the west coast of India, according to radio signals picked up in Bombay. Captain Turner was last seen as a lone figure standing at attention on the main deck of the 5296-ton Panamanian freighter, San Mardeno, as she slowly heeled over and disappeared. The remainder of the ship’s crew were rescued by the British tanker Caltex Wellington (10,645 tons) and the Indian coaster Kalavati (1048 tons). The last' man to be taken off was a ' Chinese crew member, who stayed on deck with Captain Turner supervising rescue operations. He was injured during the rescue, and was being taken to hospital on his arrival at Bombay today.
