GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS H. H. MEREDITH Last week a wide circle of relatives and friends gathered with good wishes on the occasion of the golden wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs H. H. Meredith, of Mere Mere avenue, Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs Meredith were married on June 29, 1904, in Hastings, where Mr Meredith was manager of the Heretaunga Co-operative Dairy Company. Ten years later they moved to a farm at Waikakahi, South Canterbury, where they lived for 34 years before retiring to Palmerston North. During that time Mr Meredith took a leading part in the affairs of the Waimate district. He was chairman of directors of the Waimate Co-operative Dairy Company for 25 years, and a director of the South Island Dairy Association for 25 years, for 11 of which he was chairman. Mr Meredith’s interests also extended into the social life of the district and he and his wife were well-known for their hospitality. Mrs Meredith is a keen social worker, and numbered among her interests are the Womens’ Institute and the Plunket Society. She is the possessor of a certificate from the Plunket Society commending her 30 years’ loyal and devoted service. Of Mr and Mrs Meredith’s two sons and two daughters, one daughter died some time ago. They have eight grandchildren.

Many members of the family were present at the anniversary. Mrs Meredith made the cake, and was assisted in decorating it by Mrs M. Winchcomb, who was the bridesmaid at her wedding, and who is at present spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs Meredith.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FEDERATED FARMERS

Styx.—The June meeting of the Styx branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was held in the Papanui R.S.A. Hall. Mrs Rule presided. Mrs Hope read the president’s annual report from the provincial executive and then the monthly newsletter. Final arrangements were made for the twentyfourth birthday party on July 22, and a church parade at the Methodist Church, also this month. It was decided that the Dunsandel branch would send a voting delegate to the conference in Wellington, Mrs J. A. Mackie being elected. Mrs Hanright was appointed voting delegate to attend the Dominion conference at Wellington. A talk on her life in South Africa was given by Mrs Ferguson. Mesdames Doyle and Hassall were appointed voting delegates to replace the president and Mrs Gibson on the Canterbury North provincial. It was decided to revert to monthly competitions. Mrs Benjes was thanked for making birthday and presentation sprays during the year. It was agreed to support the appeal of Mrs Ayers to make soup for old people during the winter. Miss Ensor was thanked for making peggy-squares knitted by members into a quilt for Boys’ Town. It was stated that a cot quilt made by Miss Ensor had been given to the Red Cross.
