FINANCING OF AIRPORT
AGREEMENT NOT REACHED FURTHER STEP IN NEGOTIATIONS “The position regarding the financing of work at the Christchurch International Airport as it has been for three years still stands,” said Cr. T. H. McCombs (chairman of the City Council’s finance committee) after a meeting of the committee yesterday. The council, he said, had received a letter from the Government on the financing, the purport of which was that the Government held to an undertaking by a former council, a Citizens’ council, to share the costs equally. The Labour council, he said, had made a proposition to the Government that only certain classes of development should be shared on the 50 per cent, each basis. That was unacceptable to the Government. “We are inviting the Commissioner of Works and officers to come down and discuss it on the spot," said Cr. McCombs.
