CHURCH RALLY IN EAST GERMANY
Huge Crowd At Final Service (Special Co~ espondevt N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LEIPZIG, July 12. A five-day rally of the All-German Evangelical Church ended yesterday with a last service in the centre of Leipzig, which is believed to be the biggest of its kind ever held in Germany. Police estimated the crowd to be between 300,000 and 500,000 —a crowd at least three times as big as that at Billy Graham’s final rally in London’s Wembley Stadium. The enormous congregation spread out in a semi circle in front of a white cross more than 40 feet high. The singing of hymns and the recital of the Lord’s Prayer could be heard miles away. The singing was led by a band of 1000 brass instruments. The collection was taken by hundreds of white-hooded Sisters of Charity in white aprons. They carried it in a long procession to three large boxes in front of the Cross. Speakers at the rally repeatedly emphasised that Christian Gospel came ahead .of political beliefs, Communist or any other.
