DREDGING OF THE ESTUARY

Sir,—l would like to add my congratulations to “The Press” for its excellent and timely article on the various levels in Christchurch, It brings to the attention of thinking citizeDs the amount of low-lying, useless land which adjoins the Estuary. This land can be raised and used for housing by the use of the amazing Westminster dredge. It is not correct to say that the mud pumped out of the jstuary would be no good for housing sections. Overseas reports show that it would be excellent for this purpose. A nlan has been submitted to the Christchurch City Council showing how the Estuary can be dredged and land reclaimed, thus serving two purposes—making the Estuary an aquatic playground and providing housing sections and recreational grounds out of useless land. Surely it is not too much to ask the Westminster Dredging Company to give a report on the plan?—Yours, etc, J. G. POWER. July 12, 1954.
