ORIENT SHIPPING LINE

SIR LESLIE MORSHEAD TO RETIRE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 12. The general manager in Australia of the Orient Line, Sir Leslie J. Morshead, will retire on September 18, 1954. Sir Leslie Morshead was born at Ballarat in 1889. After distinguished service in the First World War, ne joined the Orient Line in 1924, and served mainly at Sydney and Melbourne. He became general manager in January, 1948. In the Second World War he commanded the Tobruk garrison during the siege in 1941. He was General Officer Commanding the A.I.F. in the Middle East in 1942-43, and commanded the 9th Australian Division at El Alamein. Sir Leslie Morshead will be succeeded as general manager in Australia by Mr John D. Bates. Mr Bates was born at Plymouth in 1904, and joined the Orient Line as an assistant purser in 1925. He transferred to the Australian shore staff in 1929, and is at present assistant branch manager at Sydney.
