LANDY FAILS IN ATTEMPT ON 1000 METRES RECORD (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) HELSINKI, July 11. The Australian, John Landy, today won the 1000 metres race in 2min 20.9sec—fivetenths of a second outside the present record. Landy, the world’s fastest miler, was running at Letala, in south-west Finland, in a bid to break the record set up at Bislett stadium, Oslo, last September by Audun Boysen, the Norwegian Olympic runner.
