HYDRO MINING AT STOCKTON
WORKERS OBJECT TO CONTRACT DISCUSSIONS TO BE HELD THIS WEEK (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, June 27. The national council of United Mineworkers is being called together in Wellington on July 1 to meet the national executive of the Federation of Labour for discussions on a contract let to Messrs Moynihan and Slee, of Westport, in the Stockton area. This contract concerns hydro mining on State property, and it has been proposed that men should be taken from the Stockton State mine to carry out the work.
The union objects to the contract, as it claims that it involves “tribute mining.” Mr F. Crook, national secre'tary of United Mine workers, said last evening that representations had been made to the Minister of Mines (Mr W. Sullivan) to hold the matter over until further discussions had been held. - The union’s national officials. Messrs A. Prendiville, Crook, and Gorman, and the national executive of the Federation of Labour met the Minister last Wednesday and asked him not to proceed with the contract. “In view of the serious position which has arisen the national council is meeting,” said Mr Crook.
