VISIT OF FIVE U.S. PLANES

FIRST TO LAND TOJJAY

AT OHAKEA

OTHERS TO FLY OVER CHRISTCHURCH

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 15.

The C 54 Skymaster carrying the advance party of American airmen for this week’s visit to New Zealand will arrive at Ohakea at 4 p.m. tomorrow direct from Melbourne. The other four aircraft —a Globemaster and three Superfortresses—will arrive there at 5 p.m. on Thursday after flying over Christchurch and Wellington.

The C 124 Globemaster is about two and a half times heavier than the Skymaster, and can carry 200 troops with their equipment. The 829 Superfortress is the heavy bomber of World War II which was used to blast Japan with aoout 100.000 tons of incendiaries. 42,000 tons of explosives, and two atom bombs.

The five planes arrived at Melbourne yesterday after a non-stop flight from Darwin. They are carrying upwards of 100 airmen, some of high rank, and will have covered about 15.000 miles by the time they return to Okinawa to rejoin the Far East Command. About 20 of the visitors are to give lectures at Ohakea and Wellington.
