“MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL”

EXPLANATORY TALKS ON DRAMA

Four short talks dealing with T. S. Eliot’s play, “Murder in the Cathedral,” will be given in the Christchurch Cathedral on Sunday afternoon to create interest in the Christchurch Religious Drama Society’s production of the play, which will be presented in the Cathedral from June 23.

The Dean tff Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) will speak on the religious implications of the drama; Mr Patrick Carey, the producer, will discuss its production; Mr C. Foster Browne, organist and choirmaster of the Cathedral, will talk on the music that will be used in the ptay; and Mr A. W. Stockwell, senior lecturer in English at Canterbury University College, will discuss the historical and literary angle. The aim of the talks is to help to make the public more familiar with the background of the play and the events which led to the murder of Thomas a Becket, as well as with the work of Eliot.

In the society’s oroduction, the Rev. P. W. D. Parr will take the part of Archbishop Thomas a Becket. The four tempters will be played by William Scannell, Gavin Henderson, David Schwartz, and Vivian Spencer; and the roles of priests will be played by Keith Cook, Edward Booth, and Walter Hobbs.
