ENTRANCE TO UNIVERSITY
MISS V. TOWNSEND’S VIEW The principal of Avonside Girls’ High School (Miss V. Townsend) does not believe in examination for entrance to the university. Yesterday Miss Townsend was reported in “The Press” as having said that variation in standards in different schools was unavoidable; that the same treatment should be meted out to all candidates. They should sit an examination. she was reported as saying This was incorrect. -Variation in standards in different types of schools in different parts of the country is unavoidable.” said Miss Townsend yesterday. “The same treatment should be meted out to all candidates. They should either all sit an examination or there should be no examination at all.” Miss Townsend said that until about 18 months ago she had held the opinion that an examination should replace the present accrediting system, but she had “now come round to the view that there should be no examination either.” -Entrance to the university should b« without restriction for those who have earned University Scholarships. University Bursaries or Higher School Certificates on two years of sixth form work.” she said. “If pupils leave after one year in the sixth form my suggestion would be that they could gain entrance to the university with an en- ' dorsed school certificate in subjects examinable by the university, provided they are 18 years of age at the beginning of the university session.”
