The hot favourite Lancaster nearly refused to take part in the race .when the barrier tapes flew up in yesterday’s Brisbane Cup. The start... Mr Jim Kelly, said later mat.. Lancaster hesitated for “'one horrible moment." Mr Kelly added that it looked as though he had taken it. into his head not to go with them. However, Lancaster, which was backed from 5 to 4 against to 5 to 4 on, gathered speed quickly and moved into second place within half a furlong. He headed First Century soon after straightening up, and went on to defeat Lord Forrest by two lengths. Lancaster played up very badly at the start, which was from an open barrier. The owner, Mr R. L. Buckenhapi, and the trainer, Frank Kennedy, did not know that the start would be from an open barrier. They thought that the usual Eagle Farm stalls would be used. At his only New Zealand start from beiJejjK* ® arr * er ' SDCSS ter nearly went Mr Buckenham told newspapermen that much of Lancaster’s success was due to Darby Munro. "He is unquestionably the best jockey in tne world, and I have seen all the top boys in action in all the leading counteies, said Mr Buckenham.
