WATER STORAGE FOR POWER

HEAVY RAIN IN ALPS

The first even slightly encouraging reports on water storage for the South Island power system to be issued for some time were offered yesterday, when it was stated, late in the afternoon. that it was raining fairly hard at Pukaki and Tekapo, and raining heavily in the ranges at the head of these lakes.

New snow has fallen In the area, and the north-west rain may have melted enough of it to be of some little assistance in staying the rapid decrease in water storage. It will be a day or two before the benefit of the rain—if there is to be much benefit—can be measured.

Yesterday morning’s readings put the storage total as 108,600,000 units, a decrease of 900,000 units from Monday morning’s total. Already this is some 75,000,000 units less than the total at the corresponding time last vpar.
