FARMING ON WEST COAST
Sir, — A Westland farmer has written to me asking for an expression of opinion on the farming possibilities of the district. During my association with the Department of Agriculture, I visited on many occasions practically all districts in Westland and came to the conclusion that, there was a bright future for grassland farming on the Coast. With liming and topdressing and using nothing but certified pasture seeds, excellent pastures can be established. For many years past some very high producing dairy herds have been established; and the quality of the beef cattle and lambs is widely acknowledged. In many districts there is the problem of drainage and the clearing of land by big machinery. This is a young man’s job. The future of Westland lies in developing the land; and such a move will pay dividends.— Yours, etc., r. McGillivray. June 14, 1954.
