RETIRING TEACHER HONOURED

Miss B. L. Hale, who has recently retired from her post of senior mistress at the Christchurch West High School, has been the honoured guest at many farewell parties and has received many gifts. The girls who are pupils at the school combined to give Miss Hale a convex mirror and some books; the senior English form gave her two crystal vases and the Parents’ Association showed its gratitude with a sheaf of flowers. At an afternoon tea party the board of managers made a gift of china, and at an evening function the staff, past and present, entertained Miss Hale, and presented her with a nest of tables.

After graduating at Canterbury Universitv College with honours in English, Miss Hale taught for some years at Thames High School. In 1936. when the West Christchurch District High School became a high school. Miss Hale was appointed as an assistant in the English department. On the retirement of the late Miss I. W. Best Miss Hale became senior mistress.

Miss Hale was an outstanding personality in the school. She was a capable teacher of English, and she gained the affection and respect of her pupils and the staff by her personal qualities.
