OBITUARY
MR H. J. MACKIE A retired schoolteacher held in high esteem in Canterbury and Taranaki, Mr Howard James Mackie, died in Christchurch on Sunday, aged 60. Mr Mackie began teaching in 1910 as a pupil teacher. He spent two years at a teachers’ training college. After teaching at Fitzroy, Inglewood and Okau, he joined the First N.Z.E.F. in 1915. A member of the Third Field Ambulance, he was wounded at the Somme in 1916 and invalided home. Returning to teaching in August, 1919, Mr Mackie was releiving teacher at Lincoln School, and filled various relieving duties during 1920. He was also an assistant at the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College, and later assistant master at St. Albans and Sydenham schools. Mr Mackie became secondary assistant master at the Christchurch West District High School, and in September, 1933, was appointed headmaster of the Hawarden District High School.
In February, 1938, Mr Mackie became headmaster of Spreydon School. Four years later he was appointed headmaster of Phillipstown School, retiring op January 31, 1952. Mr' Mackie was a keen cricketer, and was for a number of years a member of the Sydenham Cricket Club. He was formerly president of the Canterbury-Westland branch of the Bible in Schools League. When the league was taken over by the Council pf Christian Education, Mr Mackie secretary-organiser for nearly 11 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters (June and Pauline). MR A. C. LANGFORD (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, June 14. Mr Arthur Clive Langford, a retired Gisborne farmer and prominent Mason, died suddenly at Napier on Saturday night. Born at Christchurch in 1886, he was educated there and later worked at the “Longbeach” station for some years. He then came to the North Island, eventually taking up farming at Matawhero.
Mr Langford- was a past president of the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
He is survived by his wife, three ans and two daughters.
