STOCK EXCHANGES LITTLE CHANGE IN MARKETS Markets were fairly active on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, but were flat in parts. Business was well spread, ’and prices were stable. Price rises easily outnumbered falls. Frozen meat, gas, and loan and agencies presented the strongest fronts. Banks were lightly traded on a steady market, although there were signs of a halt being called in the recent succession of rises recorded by Commercial Bank of Australia issues. Sellers were again in fairly full force, but were outnumbered by buyers.

Ballins Breweries continued to be active, four parcels being sold unchanged at 26s 6d, with more on offer at the same price at the close. New Zealands were fractionally lower at 45s 9d when traded on an ex dividend basis, and there was good buying support at the close at 45s 6d, with sellers 9d away. A feature of the day was the rise of 5s in Canterbury Frozen Meat preferences, which climbed further to business at £7 2s 6d. The market for Christchurch Gas ordinaries improved to buying offers of 17s on a market bare of sellers. Insurances were quiet, with New Zealands still wide at £6 5s and £6 10s respectively.

Woollens were firm for most Issues, with a slackening in demand for Feltex (Australia) and Kormas. There was good buying support for Kaiapoi ordinaries at 28s and the preferences at 27s 6d, but sellers were reticent.

Coles rights were fractionally better in sales at 10s 3d, with more on offer at the same figure, but buyers dropped their bids to 10s. Quotations for the company’s shares were steady at 15s and 15s 2d respectively. Woolworths, Ltd., met a weaker market in sales at 17s 8d and 17s 9d, buyers remaining in at the lower figure. Whakatane fully-paids continued to firm,* the ordinaries being sought at 20s and the preferences at 20s 9d, but there were no sellers.
