CYCLING

25MILE TIME TRIALS

CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY R. FOWLER

The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association held its first road championship of the season on Saturday, when riders from four of the clubs affiliated to the centre took part in a 25-mile time trial. The championship was run over the Avon Club’s out-and-home course, commencing at Avonhead road.

Conditions in the morning, when the junior trials were held, were ideal, but before the senior riders were sent away a moderate wind sprang up, and it was fairly heavy going at the start and again in Russley road on the return journey. Considering the conditions some very good times were put up, . especially by R. Fowler (Avon), who gained the fastest time to win the championship. His time for the 25 miles was 62min 25sec.

J. P. Wylie (Christchurch), who was riding exceedingly well, had gained 15 seconds on Fowler at the turn, and could quite easily have been a strong contender for the time had he not punctured in the first two miles of the homeward journey. L. Lock (Avon), an Empire Games representative, also punctured two miles short of the turn and withdrew. The junior trial was a triumph for the Papanui Club, which filled the first six places. V. Bond, who was first away, covered the distance in 62min 52sec, and his club-mate, B. Eden, who finished second, was 2min 38sec behind him.

In each event there was a sealed handicap, and in the junior division the first three places were taken by the Christchurch Club. L. Lambert, with a handicap of 12 seconds, won in the handicap time of 56min 16sec.

D. Harlick (Papanui) rode well to cover the distance in 69min 59sec. and by receiving 12 seconds handicap won this event in 57min 59sec from R. Kennard (Christchurch), whose time was 58min 42sec.

During the day a women’s six-mile handicap event was held, and the high standard of riding by the women was fully maintained. A meritorious performance was put up by J. Johnstone, who had ridden all the way from Sumner and arrived just in time to take her place on the scratch mark with two other riders. After her long ride to the race she went on to take third place and fastest time in 16min 34sec. It was a brilliant finish for time honours between Johnstone and S. McGlinchy, who was beaten for the major prize by three-tenths of a second. N. Dyer, who won, rode a well-judged

race. After leaving her co-marker she picked up R. Smith, off 2? minutes, and these two helped each other in keeping away from the scratch riders. Dyer doing the best in the final sprint. Abbreviations: Avon (A.), Christchurch (C.), Papanui (P.), South Malvern (S.M.). Results:—
