Southern States To Defy Segregation Ruling
• (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 12. Officials of 12 Southern States had reached agreement not to comply voluntarily with the Supreme Court’s decision ruling out racial segregation in public schools, a report in the “New York Times’’ says today. Three States, West Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky, declared they could adjust their educational systems to comply with the Court’s decision. The report named eight 'of the remaining 12 States as Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Virginia. The four other States were not identified. The Governor of Virginia (Mr Thomas Stanley), acting as the conference spokesman, said that although there was a “uniformity of attitude” among the 12 States, there was no common agreement on a course of action to be taken to solve their individual problems.
