MANAWATU CLUB
STEWARDS’ HANDICAP TO SABOTEUR
(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, June 13. Except for showers early, the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting at Awapuni was opened under ideal conditions.
Highlights of the day included the finish to the Winter Cup and the brilliant run of Saboteur to beat the short-priceu favourite, King’s Fair, in the Stewards’ Handicap, second leg of the double. The winning double, Meresun-Saboteur, paid £625 19s Gd for £l.
The attendance was poor when the programme opened, but improved, and the totalisator turnover was £64,162 10s, compared with £69,125 10s last year. The going was good for winter racing. The handling of Peter Ora in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase was questioned, particularly as the horse Covered so much extra ground. The inquiry showed that this horse had continuously run off in the« hunting field, and that for the race the jockey had been instructed to keep Peter Ora on the outer going into the fences to prevent him from running bff. The explanation of the jockey and the horse’s connexions was accepted. In the Stewards’ Handicap King’s Fair was left at the start. V. J. Sellars stated that the horse attempted to anticipate the start, and that he checked it. At that moment the starter released the barrier. Results:—
