AMALGAMATION WITH CHRISTCHURCH
SOCKBURN-HORNBY NOT CONTIGUOUS
Because the built-up areas of Hornby and Sockburn are not contiguous with the existing boundary of the city, they cannot be amalgamated with Christchurch, even if the electors desired to leave the Paparua county. The townships are separated by Waimairi county land and the borough of Riccarton from t|ie city. The scheme submitted by the City Council in 1949 to the Local Government Commission, which approved it, covered an area which included the Sockburn and Hornby districts, said the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast), commenting on a proposal at the counties’ amalgamation meeting on Thursday. The scheme embraced the area between the city boundary and the townships, thus giving the contiguity required by law, but it had not been carried out.
If amalgamation was possible, Sockburn and Hornby would be welcomed to the city, said the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.). There was no doubt that, if Riccarton amalgamated, the city would expand to include the townships, Hornby being in a line south from Papanui. The city would be more balanced. However; two polls on the amalgamation issue had been held in Riccarton, where the issue now seemed to be dead.
