Land Tax Opposed
The conference of the New Zealand Fruit and Produce Merchants’ and Auctioneers’ Federation supported the view of the Associated Chambers of Commerce that land tax should be abolished. In revaluation, the unimproved value of farming land had in some cases risen 200 to 300 per cent, because of the “urban spawl,” said Mr A. R. Simm (Wellington). He said that the unimproved of a farm of 118 acres near Christchurch had increased from £9500 to £28,000, and taxation on the property had increased from £l7O to £345. The £3.300,000 obtained by this tax was a footling amount compared with collection costs, he said. —(P.A.)
