Profits Made From International
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 10. The English Rugby Union did well out of international matches at Twickenham last season. Three of them together, with the final trial, realising a profit of £63,267. The sale of photographic rights and the profit from catering helped to raise the match account profit to £66,165. This compares with £36,953 in 1953, when only two internationals were played. The biggest money-maker was the Welsh match, with a profit of £24,850 sterling. ‘ The AU Blacks game showed a profit of £24.491, and £10,305 of this went to help cover the New Zealanders’ expenses. The surplus from the Irish match was £23 > ,106, and from the final trial £1125. Taxation took out of the union’s profit £20,122, compared with £7087 tlfe previous year. The exemption of amateur sport from the entertainment tax was described as a “great benefit.” It helped the union lend a further £10.555 to clubs to buy their grounds. - The union now has a total of £79,645 on loan to 73 clubs. Taking the English side to Paris to play France cost £1169, and the trip to Edinburgh cost £594. Straw to cover Twickenham before the internationals cost £lO9. Scott will, not be available .for selection for the North Island Rugby team to play the South Island at Christchurch on June 19. C. J. Loader, another member of the 1953-54 All Black team, will not be available for the match, for medical reasons. He suffered a blow on the nose, and has been advised to take <] spell from Rugby for a few weeks.
R.N.Z.A.F. ISITT CUP COMPETITION
WOODBOURNE OUTCLASSES OHAKEA (New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, June 10. The Woodbourne R.N.Z.A.F. Station Rugby team outclassed Ohakea by 43 points to 8 in a second-round match in the Isitt Cup competition this afternoon. Woodbourne had a feast of the ball against weak opposition. Stewart, on the wing, and Farrington, at centre, between them, scored 23 points. Stewart scored four tries and converted one. Farrington scored three tries, converted four, and kicked a field goal. Woodbourne’s next match is with Wigram, the cup holder, towards the end of July.
WIGRAM BEATS TAIERI IN R.N.Z.A.F. TOURNEY
In a R.N.Z.A.F. Rugby match in the •second round of the Isitt Cup, Wigram beat Taieri by 27 to 3. Tries were scored for Wigram by B. Smith (2), V. J. Wyatt (2), B. G. Palmer, and L. M. Young. C. H. Willetts converted three and kicked a penalty goal. For Taieri, Waka kicked a penalty.
