TIMARU MAIN SCHOOL
APPEAL TO MINISTER FOR REPLACEMENT
“The Timaru Main School is of very ancient vintage and is in urgent need of replacement,” said the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) on his return to Christchurch after an inspection of the school.
“The conditions are not good from an educational standpoint,” Mr Algie continued. “This school was placed by the Canterbury Education Board on its list of works for 1954-55. Because our urgent need is to provide classrooms where none exist or to provide accommodation for extra children we had to decline replacement jobs as a class. For that reason Timaru Main School was excluded from this year’s list.
“The case, however, is so urgent that I have been asked to see whether I can find a way of reinstating it in the building list. The state of the school is such as to provide an eloquent appeal for immediate action, and I intend to do what I can to meet the need,” Mr Algie said.
