TECHNICAL BEATS UNIVERSITY

One of the surprises of the sixth round of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competitions on Saturday was the defeat of University by Technical in a fast, even game, which was all in University’s favour in the second half. Trinity beat Seiwyn 4-3 after being one goal down at halftime, and High School Old Boys, down at half-time, beat Woolston 4-1. Old Boys’ victory gives them a lead of two points and a half over Woolston, which is half a point ahead of Seiwyn, Trinity, and University. Following are the points gained by the senior division:-

First Division.—High School Old Boys SJ, Woolston 3,. Seiwyn 2J, University 2J, Trinity 21, Technical 2. Second Division.—Sydenham 6, Harewood 41, West Old Boys 3, Woolston 21, New Brighton 2, Teachers’ College 0.

TECHNICAL v. UNIVERSITY Technical completely rearranged its team, and the alteration brought a distinct improvement in the play generally. J. Newburn and M. Abrams went into the back line, with A. Roberts as centre-half, and L. Lloyd was inside left. B. Newburn was absent, and his place at right half was filled by K. Collins. W. Cole filled the gap on the left wing. The changes put new dash into the attack, and the forwards, well supplied by Roberts, had the University backs and halves frequently in trouble in the first half. Abrams, at bgck, got his team out of many dangerous corners, clearing well upfield.

The first spell was very even, and play went from end to end with all players striving to gain an advantage, and the score, 2-1 in favour of Technical at hafftime, was a fair indication of the relative strength of the teams. In the second spell University was on the attack for most of the time, and only on very few occasions was the University circle invaded. University did everything but score. First Hackell and then McGregor and Cotton missed comparatively easy chances after clever field play had made the openings. Certainly the Technical defence should be given credit, but it is sldom that so many chances fail to produce one goal.

In the University forwards, Cotton, Haskell, and Bennett worked hard and cleverly. All three, halves kept the Technical forwards from bcoming formidable, and Jackson was very sound at left back. P. Cotton scored for University and L. (Lloyd (2) for Technical.

Umpires: Messrs K. Mortimer and C. A. Rogers.

TRINITY v. SELWYN The game between Trinity and Selwyn was at times brilliant. In the first round Trinity won 4-1, but at half-time on Saturday Selvyyh was leading. Trinity made a fine recovery to win by 4 goals to 3. At times there was play that would have done credit to an Indian team, such as B. Miskimmin’s first goal for Selwyn, when he jockeyed his way through with the ball on his stick to leave Barnhill standing. There was, too, Allen’s goal for Trinity to even the score, but the best of them was that of Midge Thomas, who snapped up a pass at the twenty-five, with a Dyan Chand movement, and weaved his way past the Selwyn defence to score the winning goal. Although beaten, Selwyn played the better hockey and generally showed better cohesion and combination, but the individual players just lacked that sudden snap of some of the Trinity players. E. Skimmin and J. Reece fitted together brilliantly, but faded in the second half. Blakely and McOscar were the mainstay of the half line, McOscar being particularly safe. M. Clements, at right back, is playing consistently well this year, and must be considered unlucky to miss representative honours. He plays a steady defensive game, and rarely wastes a clearing shot. Trinity owed its win to the brilliance of a few of the players in snapping up opportunities. Goals were scored for Trinity by Allen, Burgess, Dickie, and Thomas, and for Selwyn by Miskimmin, Reece, and Hocking.

Umpires: Messrs F. Iggo and B. W. Rogers.

OLD BOYS v. WOOLSTON Once Old Boys settled down they scored quickly against the keen Woolston side. The game set a standard of club hockey which augurs well. Even when trailing 4-1, Woolston was attacking cleverly, and was never more formidable than in the closing stages of the game. Old Boys owed their win as much to stout defence as to the scoring ability of their forwards. Once the goal was near there was no hesitation, and both P. Blythe and I. Armstrong showed the value' of decision in the scoring area. Once again Blythe and Armstrong were the spearheads of the Old Boys* attack, and they were given several good opportunities by N. Thomas on the wing. In the halves P. Hanna and R.. Cummins showed Improved form, and the defence, with R. Eaves in good form, was solid.

Woolston had few weaknesses. When it attains its full strength it will be a fine club side. N. Hobson was a fine leader of the forwards, and her made many openings for his wing. He still needs more snap close to the goal, and experience in bigger- hockey may well give him this. J. ;Adams. after five weeks of? with an injury, came back into the team, and, though obviously short of work, did well at right half. He is another youngster who will improve. R. Lapworth played a fine game at centre half, and was well supported by R. Gillespie on the left. The first half was even, with some attractive work by both sets of forwards. Woolston scored the only goal when P. McKeogh came out of a melee with the ball to het at close range. It held the* lead in some even play in the second half until I. Armstrong, in a typical run, ecored for Old Boys. From a penalty bully Old Boys went ahead, and Blythe clinched the issue with a splendid angle shot from a long corner. He added another with tenacious following up. Then Woolston attacked really . well, but the attacks were met by resolute, if at times ragged, defence. . Umpires: Messrs J. Mann and E. Jackson.
