H-BOMB WARFARE “CRIMINAL”
Chaplin Denounces Acceptance
VEVEY (Switzerland), June 3. Mr Charles Chaplin, in a special statement issued from his lakeside villa today, said that acceptance of hydrogen warfare, with all its attending horrors, was a crime against the human spirit, and was creating world insanity. The statement was made on the occasion of his receiving a peace prize awarded to him by the World Peace Council’s recent meeting in East Ber-
lin. Mr Chaplin said: “The desire for peace is universal. Whether from the East or West, I firmly believe it is a step in the, right direction. Therefore I am honoured and very happy to receive the award. “Nations will never solve the problems that threaten peace in an atmosphere of hate and suspicion; nor will the . threat of dropping hydrogen bombs solve them. Let us absolve ourselves of this miserable, cancerous atmosphere. Let us try to understand each other’s problems, for in modern warfare there is no victory. “Therefore, let us return to that which is natural and healthy in man, to the spirit of goodwill which is the basis of all inspiration and of all that is creative, beautiful, and noble in life. Let us work towards that end—towards a glorious era of peace in which all nations will prosper.”
