OVERSEAS AIR TERMINAL

COUNCIL WAITING FOR GOVERNMENT

The Christchurch City Council could make no move to improve the international terminal’s facilities at Christchurch airport until ownership and responsibility for the aerodrome were decided, said the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) last evening. This comment was made when he was. asked by “The Press” if any improvements, even a ceiling 'over the present Customs corridor, could be made before the new Tasman Empire Airways DC-6 services began operations at the end of this month.

Letters had been sent by the council to the Civil Aviation Administration several times, but, so far, no action had been forthcoming. The City Council had plans for improving the internal terminal, which was its responsibility, but “we have nothing to do with the international terminal,” said the Mayor. It was up to the Government to tnake a move. “We have told the Government we are willing to provide in our plans for an overseas reception centre. Everyone has complained about the present facilities,” he said, “but until the Government reaches some decision nothing can be done. The terminal needs improvement, but we cannot butt in.”
