PAY RISES FOR M.P.’S

CABINET DEFERS DISCUSSION

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 3. The Cabinet has decided to make no statement on the pay increase for members of Parliament before Parliament rises for the Whitsun recess on June 4. The Cabinet deferred the controversial issue because other business prevented a full discussion at its two meetings yesterday. Sir John Mellor (Conservative, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire) has announced that he will in future sit as an Independent Conservative because he disagreed with the Government’s attitude to the pay increases. He said: “I no longer accept the leadership of the Prime Minister, who is prepared to override the objections of the majority of Conservatives towards the increase in salaries.”
