POULTRY SHOW OPENS

ENTRIES TOTAL 1400 N.Z. AND SOUTH ISLAND TITLES AWARDED There were 1400 entries in the eighty-seventh annual show of the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club, which opened yesterday. Crowded into the Christchurch Fanciers’ Hall in Selwyn street, the birds, 300 more than last year, were exhibited by breeders from all over New Zealand. Although most entries came from Canterbury, there were many from places as far distant as Invercargill and Gisborne. The champion bird of the show was a partridge hen in the Old English Game class, exhibited by R. H. Johnstone, of Christchurch.

The biggest increase in entries was in the poultry and pigeon sections. The entry of 260 pigeons was the largest for many years. There was a large entry of Australorp pullets, and well-supported classes were Hamburgs and Rhode Island Reds.

Exhibits in the canary, budgerigar, and small bird sections included many beautifully-plumed birds, and most were of a high standard. Notable among the pigeons were 30 Jacobins, distinguished by the frothy hoods of feathers that almost conceal their heads.

Many New Zealand and South Island championships were allotted to the Christchurch club for award at this show. The following exhibitors were awarded New Zealand championships in their classes: —
