N.Z. Horses Impress In Brisbane
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (•Rec. 8 p.m.) BRISBANE, June 3. The New Zealand horse Lancaster, favourite for the £12,000 Brisbane Cup, is working attractively on the Brisbane tracks. His race rider, Darby Munro, worked him over six furlongs in Imin 18Jsec today, coming home over the final
two in 28sec. Lancaster is a short-priced favourite for the cup, which is to be run on June 14. Other New Zealand horses here for the big race carnival also have impressed in track gallops, particularly Rising Fast, Paper Strip, and Wakatu. Today Rising Fact, with G. Hughes up, and Paper Strip, ridden by I. Tucker, ran six furlongs in Imin 144'sec. Paper Strip moved freely and has evidently thrown off soreness which affected him early in the week. Wakatu (G. Hughes) ran the best three furlongs of the morning on the grass track, clocking 38|sec. Four of the New Zealand contingent have accepted for the races at Doomben this Saturday as a lead to the Stradbroke Handicap (June 12) and Brisbane Cup The trainer, I. Tucker, plans to run both Paper Strip and Rising Fast in the two divisions of the Flying Handicap. He said today that each would be ridden by his son, the apprentice Ivan Tucker, who claims .a 51b allowance. The Flying Handicap is over seven furlongs less 93 yards. Paper Strip has 8-4, and Rising Fast has 7-12. Both are good fields, with many tough sprinters engaged. Both Lancaster (8-12) and Takatu (8-4) have accepted for the Doomben Handicap, over 10 furlongs, and they head the weights for the race.
