TRADE DISSATISFIED WITH INCREASE

STATEMENT BY MR R. E. SPICER

Dissatisfaction with the announcement by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr J. T. Watts) that the resellers’ margin on motor spirit is to be increased by Id a gallon was expressed by the chairman of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Retail Motor Trade Association (Mr R. E. Spicer) last evening. “The point that Mr Watts has missed is that since 1949 the Bureau of Industry has granted petrol reselling licences to a vastly increased number of resellers,” said Mr Spicer. “Thus the apparent increase in the turnover of resellers is spread over a much greater number than in 1949. “The Minister says we have increased our sales by about 70.000,000 gallons a year. However, because of the increase irr resellers, the individual gain is auite small. “The trade considers that Id a gallon, which represents much less than 1 per cent, of cost, is totally inadequate to meet increased costs, Mr Spicer concluded.
