N.Z. BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH
NUFFIELD GRANT RENEWED
TERM EXTENDED FOR FIVE YEARS (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 2. A renewal for five years of a previous three-year grant of £5OOO a yeai for fundamental biological research in New Zealand has been made by the Nuffield Foundation, London. Advice of this grant has been received by the Nuffield New Zealand Advisory Committee. In 1951 the foundation made its first grant of this nature to New Zealand as part of its policy to foster fundamental research in the Commonwealth. As before, the funds will be administered by the advisory committee in New Zealand, of which Sir Charles Hercus, of Dunedin, is chairman. The committee has decided to support fundamental studies in one or more of the following subjects:—endo-. crine problems, with, particular reference to lactation; marine biology, with special reference to the iodine cycle; plant and forest problems, with special reference to the restoration of plant cover on eroded or deteriorated land; plant metabolism. These are considered to be important subjects for New Zealand in which New Zealand workers have already made substantial contributions to knowledge. The programme will be decided through the university, research institutions, and Government departments interested in these problems.
